Chapter Nine

My, my, the annual spring festival certainly provided the gossip this year. If anyone thought they were going to get away with making fun of little Ellie Owens and her high school shenanigans again, they might want to think twice! This hometown heroine left us all speechless yesterday with her act of charity in the face of adversity. Looks like the joke’s on you, Dan Chumsky, for trying to embarrass her.

Sitting in his truck later that evening, Cam watched Elle’s house for any sign of life. What he really wanted to do was go beat the living crap out of that thoughtless moron Dan Chumsky. He’d been a jerk in high school and clearly, not much had changed since then.

Watching Elle’s face as she’d realized she was being ridiculed was one of the most painful things Cam had experienced in a good long time. Making the situation even worse was how heartbreaking it had been to watch her seek out her dad—only to have Ted turn away.

What the hell had that been about? Cam tightened his fingers around the steering wheel. Poor kid, he thought. He’d had a feeling she’d been hiding out for the last couple weeks. Now he knew he’d been right.

Well, the hiding was over, he thought as he pushed away from the steering wheel. Flicking his seat belt buckle, he growled. Elle was a good person. So she’d made one bad decision in high school. Hadn’t they all done things back then they regretted?

The night was quiet. But then he heard what sounded like a door opening and closing, and he decided to take a chance.

Walking around the small house, he saw her on the deck. “Elle, listen here,” he said, taking a step onto the deck. Her head snapped to the side and he froze.

It didn’t look like she’d been crying, but there was definitely hurt and pain on her face. Her lips were pinched together and frown lines surrounded her eyes.

“Ah, hell.” He bounded across the small space.

“Cam, what are you—”

Cutting off her question, he grabbed her and pulled her to his chest. That damn floral scent of hers infiltrated his senses as he held her close. She stood stiff in his arms for a few moments, before finally softening and letting out a long sigh.

I’m sorry about what happened today, Elle. But he couldn’t quite get the words out. Instead, he tightened his grip on her.

When she pulled away after a couple minutes, he felt the loss. His body ached to be near hers again. Elle walked to the railing, hopped up and sat on it, facing him.

He propped an elbow beside her.

There was a certain sadness in her eyes. Even in the dark, Cam couldn’t miss it and he hated it. “Listen, Elle,” he began.

She held up a hand. “Stop. I know what you’re going to say.” She jumped down and turned to face the water. “It wasn’t my fault. That guy’s a jerk. I shouldn’t let it bother me.
